Ocean & Lagoon Cleanup
Clearing the path for reef recovery by removing the debris that chokes our lagoons and marine life
As part of our commitment to protecting life below Mauritius’ waves, LagoonLife Foundation is actively engaged in lagoon cleaning operations in the La Prairie region. This area, located along the southwest coast of the island, is where we will soon launch our coral restoration efforts. Before introducing any new coral structures, we are working to ensure the lagoon is cleared of pollution that threatens the survival of its existing coral life.

Removing Threats to Coral Health
Our team focuses on extracting plastic waste, bottles, ropes, and fishing nets—especially ghost nets that drift into the lagoon from deep-sea fishing activity. These materials become entangled around corals, blocking sunlight and oxygen, and can lead to the slow death of fragile reef systems. This debris is not just unsightly—it poses a direct risk to marine life and coral survival.
A Strategic Location: La Prairie
The zone between Macondé and the Underwater Waterfall is subject to strong and complex currents. These currents funnel debris into the La Prairie lagoon, where it settles among living corals. Our cleanup operations are currently focused in this area, where we are manually removing accumulated waste to ensure existing corals are not suffocating or dying from human negligence.
Consistent Cleanup, Real Impact
Our team carries out weekly rounds in the lagoon to monitor and remove harmful debris. This ongoing work is vital to protecting untouched corals that remain in this area—reefs that may otherwise perish under plastic and synthetic waste. Cleaning La Prairie is a critical first step in our larger mission to restore marine health in Mauritius.
